The Chinese authorities intend to continue facilitating consultations on the resumption of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program. This was announced on Tuesday during talks with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trend reports with reference to TASS .
“China will continue to take a constructive part in the negotiations on the renewal of the JCPOA in the future, will support the legitimate rights and interests of Iran, and contribute to the speedy resolution of the nuclear issue,” China Central Television quoted him as saying.
Xi Jinping noted that the Chinese government intends to expand coordination with Iran within the framework of international organizations, including the UN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
In 2015, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany signed a JCPOA with Iran to overcome the crisis over Tehran’s nuclear development. The previous President of the United States, Donald Trump, decided in 2018 to withdraw from this agreement. The current American leader, Joe Biden, has repeatedly signaled a willingness to bring Washington back into the nuclear deal.
Since April 2021, Russia, the UK, Germany, China, the United States and France have been negotiating with Iran in Vienna to restore the JCPOA in its original form. On November 10, 2022, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said that the next round of negotiations with Iranian representatives ended in the Austrian capital without any result.
