On November 22, Thailand’s Constitutional Court dismissed a petition aimed at stopping former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra from influencing the ruling Pheu Thai party. The petition claimed Thaksin was still involved in party matters, despite his denials. Thaksin, a billionaire and the father of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has consistently rejected accusations that he holds sway over the party since his 2023 return from 15 years of self-exile. The court’s decision has fueled ongoing political debate, especially among those who believe Thaksin’s influence undermines Thailand’s democratic processes. Critics argue that he remains a powerful figure in the party. Despite his…

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker BYD Auto Co plans to build a plant in Vietnam to produce car parts, three people with knowledge of the plan told Reuters. The move would reduce the company’s reliance on China and deepen its supply chain in Southeast Asia as part of a global expansion. The Xian-based carmaker, which outsold rival Tesla Inc in EVs by more than two to one in China last year, has been…

HCM CITY — Almost four in five travelers in Asia are eager to travel internationally in 2023 as concerns around inflation and rising costs will likely not stop travelers from packing their bags, reported a new study conducted by Klook in November 2022 in nine markets, including Việt Nam. An overwhelming majority, about 81 per cent, are eager to travel internationally in the new year, with one third planning to take at least two to four trips. Rescue workers are still trying to bring Nam’s body to ground level. Prior to the press briefing, the boy’s father was taken to the scene of…
HANOI: Vietnam on Tuesday (Jan 3) mobilised soldiers and engineering experts to try free a 10-year-old boy trapped in a buried hollow concrete pillar on a construction site. Rescuers hope to raise the pillar from its 35-metre-deep (115-feet) hole and cut the boy, named Thai Ly Hao Nam, out – though after three days trapped inside, it is not clear whether he is still alive. The boy fell into the 25cm wide shaft of the pillar, sunk as part of a new bridge in Mekong delta province of Dong Thap, on Saturday, apparently while looking for scrap metal. A wider…
