The Institute for Economics and Peace has raised Vietnam’s peace ranking four places on this year’s Global Peace Index.

The institute, based in Sydney, Australia, announced the 2023 index late last month, which ranked 163 countries and territories based on three criteria: the level of societal safety and security, the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict, and the degree of militarization.

Vietnam’s ranking on the global peace index rose from rank 44th to rank 41st.

Compared to other countries in Southeast Asia, Vietnam’s ranking is lower than Singapore’s (6th) and Malaysia’s (19th), but higher than Laos’s (46th), Timor-Leste (49th), Indonesia’s (53rd), Cambodia’s (73rd), Thailand’s (92nd) and Myanmar’s (145th).

Among Asia-Pacific region nations, Vietnam ranks 7th.

When it comes to ongoing domestic and international conflict, Vietnam is ranked 43rd. When it comes to societal safety and security, Vietnam ranked 44th. When it comes to militarization, Vietnam ranked 55th.

Globally, the top five countries with the highest global peace index are Iceland, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand and Austria, while the bottom five are Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The 2023 report says the average level of global peacefulness deteriorated by 0.42% in the 9th consecutive year. It was also the 13th deterioration in peacefulness recorded over the last 15 years. In 2022, 84 countries and territories improved in peacefulness while 79 deteriorated, according to the report.
