Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi said that Indonesia and Malaysia are eyeing to improve cooperation in helping solve issues in Myanmar after the country’s military staged a coup in early 2021.
Minister Retno met with Malaysian Minister of Foreign Affairs Zambry Abdul Kadir in between the events at the European Union – ASEAN Summit in Brussels on December 14, 2022. “We have agreed to improve coordination in the ASEAN framework,” Retno said.
However, Retno did not detail the joint plan that will be established between the two countries.
Apart from the Myanmar discussion, the two foreign affairs ministers also discussed the many efforts in solving issues related to Indonesian migrant workers and the deforestation-free commodities policy introduced by the European Union.
As reported on December 8, 2022, during the Bali Democracy Forum, Minister Retno Marsudi explained that the five points of consensus formed by ASEAN leaders last year will continue to be used as a guideline in helping solve the crisis in Myanmar.
“As long as ASEAN leaders have not decided on something different, we will continue to use the five-point of consensus as a guideline for Indonesia’s chairmanship upon responding to Myanmar’s political crisis,” Retno Marsudi explained.
